Korean Adoptee Voices and “Side by Side” at the 2024 AAAS Conference

We’re hosting a film screening and educator discussion at the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) annual conference in Seattle, April 25–27, 2024.

An important focus of the Side by Side project is bringing inter-country adoptee voices to education and research. This April, we’re particularly excited to participate in the AAAS annual conference, where we’ll screen a Side by Side short documentary, discuss all Side by Side teaching resources, and present faculty-developed lesson plans, demonstrating how these filmed stories can impact learning experiences.

If you’re able to join us in Seattle on April 26, register here for the AAAS annual conference.

Teaching Side by Side: Engaging Korean Adoptee Experiences in Interdisciplinary Contexts

Date: April 26, 2024
Time: 10:00 a.m. PDT
Location: Ballard Room, Third Floor, Sheraton Grand Seattle

Speakers:

Filmmaker, Glenn Morey, will be joined by five distinguished educators and scholars in a screening of his NY Times Op Doc, Given Away, adapted from his award-winning short film, Side by Side: Out of a South Korean Orphanage and Into the World.

The panelists are Korean-born, inter-country adoptees—all faculty teaching in Asian American Studies, Social Work, Communication, College Counseling and Student Development, Ethnic Studies, and Adoption Studies.

The group will discuss the necessity of adoptee voices in fully understanding inter-country adoption history, policy, outcomes, and more. Their interdisciplinary perspective will show how Side by Side’s adoptee-centered films can help create meaningful lesson plans and indelible classroom experiences. Each panelist will present a lesson plan, discuss how they developed it, and present classroom responses.
